Reasons to give cord blood
Nearly 1,000 patients are still waiting for their matching stem cell donor.
Last year, 635 Vancouver parents donated their cord blood.
Donating cord blood costs nothing, poses no health risks, and doesn’t interfere with your birth plans.
Over 40% of donated cord blood units are given to patients under the age of 4.
2. Give birth at B.C. Women’s Hospital
On your delivery day, inform your hospital that you’re donating to the public cord blood bank. After the safe delivery of your baby and placenta, your cord blood will be brought to one of our team members.
3. Have your cord blood collected
Your cord blood will be tested to ensure there are enough cells for a patient in need. If your cord blood qualifies, our team member will visit you before you leave the hospital to collect additional information.
1. Check your eligibility
Check your eligibility with a 2-minute questionnaire. If you’re eligible to donate cord blood, complete your online registration.
How cord blood donation works
